Resorts in Tunisia usually have Tourist zones, which contain all the major hotels together. More characterful (but also less luxurious) hotels can usually be found in the center of the city.

Hotel grading: Hotels are inspected and certified by the government. A luxury hotel would have 5 stars; a basic hotel would have 1 star. We really don‘t recommend going for a one start hotel, because it will be as luxurious as a farmers shed.

A few superb villas were turned in to hotels in Tunis. In Matmata, you can stay in troglodyte hotels. Farther south you even have the possibility to camp in the desert, which you have to arrange locally. Camping in the desert is a lifetime experience, believe me, I’ve tried it.

You can pitch a Tent or park a trailer in a beach or at a park, but we really don‘t recommend it, unless your a very big fan of tents or trailers. Hotels are really reasonably priced.

Generally there are two types of youth hostels. Auberges de jeunesse are part of Hostelling International but you have to be a member. They offer very fine hostels in Tunis, Bizerte and Nabeul. Maisons des Jeunes are government and generally Spartan, however some do really have good locations.
